Versions of Us by Frankie Alexander is a gorgeous sapphic romance set in the bright, busy city of Hong Kong. Charlie Blake is a brilliant creative mind, struggling to keep her position as she fights ongoing health issues. When sharp, polished advertising star Sienna Margot arrives in Hong Kong to lead Charlie’s advertising team for a sales pitch, the tension between the two is undeniable. Both women have a fierce desire to succeed, and both are willing to do whatever it takes to maintain the precarious balance between their careers and personal lives. Sienna and Charlie must navigate their intense rivalry – and attraction to each other – while working to secure their future in the fast-paced, unforgiving world of advertising.
I was so impressed by Versions of Us – the chemistry between Charlie and Sienna is electric. They are both perfectly fleshed-out and flawed characters, each with their own personal demons to battle, and their developing relationship feels so realistic and natural. I loved the descriptions of the setting; the author has a clear love for Hong Kong that really shines through. The city is so vividly depicted – from the busy harbour to the bustling streets – that you get a very strong and deliberate sense of how chaotic, bright and bold Charlie and Sienna’s world is. I thought the advertising plot was really fun; it added so much tension and pressure to the romance. There’s also a very interesting subplot with a relevant commentary on ethics in AI technology and data sharing. Overall, this is a brilliant lesbian romance, with a great deal of love poured into its authentic characters and vibrant setting. Any fans of classic rivals-to-lovers romance will love Versions of Us.
